A New Path-Breaking Technology for Producing High Storage Discs

General Electric is one of the most well known companies and recently it claims of an achievement that is ground breaking in the field of technology. GE has come up with CD’s that have digital storage which will be equivalent to 100 DVDs. However, the product is still under making but has been a laboratory success so far. The company is meanwhile striving hard to produce the disc at lower cost so that they can be used by commercial world, the company is also working at it process of production so that it can be produced in mass communication.

This technological advancement is through the holographic storage. Holography is basically an optical process that has got immense storage capacity including the three dimensional images as well as digital data. It is the same technology that is used int eh DVDs. Blu-ray technology is the new technology for making CDs with greater storage capacity and is used for making DVDs as well.

The G.E researchers have made use of these holograms for making this one of kind storage DVD. They have used a different approach for producing these special discs. They have made less complex and small holograms for producing this ultimate storage discs. This method is called a micro-holographic storage. One of the challenges faced by the researchers is the way in which they can make enough reflection of light from the small holograms so that their data can be read and retrieved. The team has found a solution for it in the recent pas t through which the reflective power of the holograms has increased by 200 times and is readable by the Blu-ray machines.

The cost of these CDs is also one of the major point to be though about and GE feels that the product will be introduced by 2011 or 2012 and it should cost nearly 10 cents for one gigabyte. The CDs produced through, micro-holographic storage method will be able to store up to 500 gigabytes.
